The Organ - Grab That Gun

The Organ are an all gay, all woman New Wave punk band from Vancouver, BC. To put it simply The Organ are a female version of The Smiths plus, surprise surprise, an organ. Angsty lyrics, melancholic delivery and androgyny all allow for a very interesting outlook on what it would have been like if Morrissey and Johnny Marr had been born woman in the late 80s. Unfortuatly The Organ broke up after only putting out this album and 2 EPs due to strife between the band members.

This album offers almost exactly 30 minutes (30:01) of post-punk new wave songs about love, hate and depression all backed by sad guitar rifts and an ever present organ(an no, not like the kind you have in your body[I'm sorry I had to make that shitty joke].) And while most people will rag on The Organ for their almost copy cat like qualities Grab That Gun is one of my all time favorite albums, I've been listening to it for years and I don't see me ever stopping. Not much more can be said by me about this album so I'll leave you with a quote from one of their songs Basement Band that pretty much sums up their music. "We should put that record on, the one you find when you were gone. The one that has those sad, sad songs that make you sing out loud."

Rome - Nos Chants Perdus

Rome as many of you may or may not know are a Luxembourg based Neofolk and Martial Folk band best known for their militaristic, marching band(and not like in high school) sound but upon the release of this album Rome decided to change styles and that did not bode well with fans of their older material.

Nos Chants Perdus is an experiment in a poppier take on Martial Folk, it emphases melody over atmosphere and unlike so many Neofolk and Martial Folk bands Rome's lyrics lean left of the political spectrum(not to say that this is political music.)  As I already mentioned this change in sound did not go over well with many of Rome's fans but I personally find their shift into a more poppier sound interesting, catchy and ultimately their music doesn't suffer from their change in sound(in fact I think it improves.) So whether or not you're a fan of Neofolk or Martial Folk check out this album if you get a chance, it's a solid 40 minutes of tracks about love, pacifism, banks and God.

:Of The Wand & The Moon: - Lucifer

:Of the Wand & The Moon: is a Danish neofolk/martial folk band fronted by singer songwriter Kim Larson. Lucifer, like most of his music, this is a soothing mix of bare bones acoustic guitar playing, lullaby like vocals and dabblings in ambiance. Some may not be a fan of this album's pace but for fans of the genre and the band it's slow creeping pace comes at no surprise. And in fact this slow paced mix between creepy synths, acoustic guitar and dark lyrics are the pillars of what make neofolk neofolk, and it's what us fans love about the genre. Though this album does top out at just under 40 minutes the trance it puts you in seems to last much longer.

For anyone who is a fan of neofolk or a fan of dabblings in darkness in general I highly recommend you check out this album.
